If a joke can hurt your religious sentiments then you’re probably not a strong believer.

So there has been a controversy going on in Australia over an commercial by a company called “We love our lamb” with the title “You Never Lamb Alone” showing Lord Ganesha feasting with all other gods of different religions and they are probably eating Lamb.

If you think that a funny video is hurting your religion then you’re actually insulting your faith by doubting it’s strength.

There are no visuals in the video but it’s obvious because it’s all about Lamb. Now for obvious reasons all the Hindu organisations are finding it offensive to Hinduism. It is in fact banned in India due to legal complaint from the government. Though I’m not sure how many Hindus share this sentiment but now that a controversy has been created out of it there would definitely be a lot of Hindus who will now find it offensive even if they didn’t before. Because this is how it works, people get influenced by what their representatives or leaders say. Most of the people don’t really care about such petty things until someone tries to propagate that their religion or faith is being attacked. Now when someone big enough to influence people’s thoughts tells them that their faith is under attack people feel a sense of fear and then their fear drives them rather than their faith. It’s ironic because Fear and Faith are opposite of each other and only one can exist in one place at a time but this fear forces people to save their faith. Making them forget that there can be no faith if there is fear so eventually their is fear is the true enemy and not someone from outside.

I don’t find this commercial offensive at all. In fact it’s hilarious. There are all the gods from all the religions feasting together and it’s really funny to see all of them are cracking jokes.

Now if I talk about myself, I’m a Hindu and Brahman to top that, and I’m proud of the fact that I’m a follower of a culture that is probably the oldest in the world today. But I don’t find this commercial offensive at all. In fact it’s hilarious. There are all the gods from all the religions except Prophet Mohammad (who called the Goddess of No-religion a.k.a. Atheism that he can’t come) feasting together and it’s really funny to see all of them are cracking jokes. Now being a Hindu I should feel anger because they are making fun of one of our Gods (as our religious leaders and people who are away from ground reality might think), but for some strange reasons I don’t feel any anger or disgust or outrage towards those who created this video, and this video didn’t really change anything about my belief and my devotion. I’m still a devotee of Lord Ganesha along with other Gods as I was before. I don’t feel this video hurt my religious sentiments in anyway. So is there something wrong with me? Does it make me a bad Hindu? Well maybe I’m not the one who decide it, may be it’s up to our leaders to decide what I feel or what I should feel about a particular thing, especially when it’s about religion. Who am I to decide what is right and what is wrong for my religion. Right? 😉

We could all use some tolerance and enjoy a good laugh rather than making an issue out of everything.

Anyways whatever people might thing about it, I would like to say that maybe we could all use some tolerance and enjoy a good laugh rather than making an issue out of everything (not to mentions you’re actually making them more famous and encouraging others to use such strategy to get easy fame). We are living in an era when no one is going to kill you for following your religion. No one is forcefully making you abandon your religion and take up theirs as long as you don’t want it. So let’s just get this dangerous idea out of our minds that our religion (may it be Hinduism, Islam, Christianity or even Scientology or any other) is under attack. It’s only under attack when people actually take up arms against your faith. So we should keep it in our mind that no funny or offensive video is going to hurt or destroy your religion. It’s only fear that is the actual enemy not someone who is cracking a joke about your faith. On the other hand if we behave like intolerant extremists it will surely have a bad impact on it. So let’s just avoid such things and enjoy small things while we can.

Here is the video and decide whether it really hurt your religion or your religious sentiments:
